Great family-friendly events happening in Shanghai this weekend

Labour Day holiday might be over, but there's still plenty of events happening this weekend to keep your family entertained. For one, today marks Cinco de Mayo and Mexican restaurants around town are dishing up the guacs, fajitas and more. You can also check out Shanghai's International Pet Expo for some fluffy cuteness, sit back and watch the second instalment of Guardians of the Galaxy, or head to Shanghai Centre for the city's fifth Family Fun Fair.

Cinco de Mayo at Mayita

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the family this year at Mexican restaurant Mayita which will be holding its annual rooftop event. On the day, expect live music and face painting from well-known local make up artist Kathryn Robbins, as well as a craft beer and magarita station for the adults. There'll also be a range of tacos, salsas and other authentic Mexican treats and dishes available on the day.

Shanghai Pet Expo 2017

Fri 5 May - Sun 7 May; Free

Shanghai's biggest pet fair is back. The event comes with everything pet-related that you can possibly imagine: 25,000 square metres of styling salons, all manner of accessories and a ‘Dog Olympics’. The event is pet-friendly and you can bring your puppies and kittens along for services and activities.

Public speaking workshop at Dulwich Minhang

9.30am-12pm, Sat 6 May; 300RMB per person

Dulwich Minhang is hosting a public speaking workshop for English- and Chinese-speaking international students between seven and 12. The workshop will be led by award-winning public speaker and toastmaster Chin Wee Kean and headmaster of the college David Ingram. The only prerequisites are enthusiasm and willingness to have a go. Event registration is essential as spaces are limited.

Peng Peng Gong: Catcher in the Rye Portrait Concert

7.30pm-9.30pm, Sat 6 May; From 50RMB

Having started composing at seven, Peng Peng Gong has developed into a respected composer and resident artist at the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. For this portrait concert, Gong presents works based on adolescence, including world premiere of Symphony No. 6 and Viola Concerto, which is based on J.D. Salinger’s work The Catcher in the Rye. A great option for a night out without the kids.

Shanghai Centre's 5th Family Fun Fair

10am-4pm, Sun 07 May; Free

The annual Family Fun Fair at Shanghai Centre is back for its fifth instalment. There will be an international band play-off, skate-ramp by Iconx, mini-soccer, American football workshop, Zumba session, watermelon eating contest, a bouncy castle and a Cardboard Shanghai art competition. Not to mention more than 50 vendors are gathering at the venue for families to browse through. All in all, this is a family mega event you don't want to miss.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
