BASF and DBC Launch New Flooring Structure in China

New flooring structure contains a new special grade of expanded TPU

Shanghai, China – May 22, 2017 – BASF and DuBaiCheng Environmental Protection Engineering Co., Ltd (DBC) today launched a new polyurethane-based flooring structure containing a special grade of expanded thermoplastic polyurethane (E-TPU), Infinergy® SP, to make sports surfaces safer.

“With its high rebound performance, the new flooring structure improves the safety of sports activities,” said Andy Postlethwaite, Senior Vice President, Performance Materials Asia Pacific, BASF. “As this solution does not contain any heavy metal content or require solvent before or during the installation of the surface, it fulfills the increasing demand for sports surfaces that meet China’s stringent national safety and environmental standards.”

Collaboration for quality control

Following the introduction of a range of MDI (Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) based sports surface products to the Chinese market in January 2016, BASF and DBC have also established a quality service control program.

Working with partners from Shanghai Chemical Building Material Trade Association and Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences Group, the full value chain quality control program brings together BASF’s reliable material solutions and professional contractors and constructors to ensure the solutions are up to the highest quality and safety standards.

“We are dedicated to providing campuses and sports venues in China with long-term flooring solutions that not only meet the highest environmental standards, but also have strong physical properties coupled with advanced construction technology. We are confident that our customers will benefit from this new solution and everyone can exercise in a safer environment,” said Mr. Lin Fanqiu, CEO of DBC.

Innovative material expertise from BASF

The new solution can be used where customers require a combination of excellent mechanical properties and good durability across a wide temperature range. BASF’s Infinergy® SP combines the benefits of thermoplastic polyurethane with typical properties of foams. It consists of a closed-cell particle foam which absorbs little water, making it particularly suitable for sports flooring applications. Another main feature is its excellent recovery behavior, which makes it one of the most elastic particle foams available on the market. Tests show that the rebound height for E-TPU can be as much as about 55 percent.
