Yangshan Port boosts capacity with 7 new berths

Yangshan Port, a deep-water port for container ships in the Hangzhou Bay, will put its fourth phase on a test run this year. With seven more berths, it will be the world’s largest automated container port, capable of handling 40 million containers a year.

After 15 years of development, Yangshan Islands in the mouth of Hangzhou Bay have changed a small fishing community with about 3,000 people into a modern port with a size of over 8 square kilometers.

After three phases of development, Yangshan Port now boasts 16 berths for ships of 70,000 DWT to 150,000 DWT, a total shoreline of 5.6 kilometers, and 8 square kilometers of container yard. It can handle more than 15 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) of containers a year.

The phase-4 project will extend its shoreline by 2,350 meters, increase its size by 2.23 million square meters, and add seven deep-water berths.
