Angelina
What
Afternoon Tea

When
2-5pm daily

Price
158RMB per person

What you get
A tea, coffee or cold drink (or for an additional 10RMB, the signature hot/iced chocolate), a savoury canapés plate including vegetable rolls, salmon mousse, cod brandade with gherkin mayonnaise and duck rillettes with country bread croutons; and for sweets, the choice of pastry (between éclair au chocolat, tarte citron, éclair Mont-Blanc etc).

The food
Enjoy but don’t dwell on the somewhat modest savoury options and instead fully immerse yourself in the generous pastry. The éclair Mont-Blanc is a highlight, with light and delicate choux pastry topped with milk chocolate and squiggles of sweet chestnut cream. From the drinks menu, it’s hard to pass up the old fashioned hot chocolate ‘L’Africain’, served with a side of whipped cream for a thick, rich and luxurious sip – it’s almost a dessert in its own right. If you’re keen for something lighter, try a pot of Thé 226 au Cacao. This mix of Chinese and Ceylon tea with chocolate aromas is considerably less heavy and provides the perfect accompaniment to the sweet and savoury bites on offer.

The locale
Attempting to recreate the famous Parisian dining room, Angelina is quintessentially French; from the intimate tables that are perfect for a tête-à-tête, to the French music resonating around the dining room. If the weather is kind, the mini garden-style terrace is a good spot to while away the afternoon.

The verdict
Although the savoury options are somewhat lacking in substance, it’s still worth stopping by for the quality sweet offerings and a pot of delicious tea or hot chocolate – best for French-style fancy.
