Russia to establish consulate in Wuhan

Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Ilyas Umakhanov, visited Wuhan recently to announce Russian plans for the establishment of a consulate general in Wuhan as well as the appointment of a consul general.

Mr. Umakhanov revealed that this plan is part of a Sino-Russian agreement signed by President Putin during his visit to China in September.

Since the 1990s, economic cooperation between Wuhan and Russia has been steadily increasing, and in 2013, the trade volume hit USD 183 million. Investment from Wuhan in Russia currently exceeds USD 10 million, and there are presently 12 Russian companies investing in Wuhan. Last year, a direct flight connecting Wuhan and Moscow was opened to facilitate increased exchange.

During their time in Wuhan, Mr. Umakhanov and his delegation visited the Wuhan-Russia Cultural Communication Center, which was once the Hankou Eastern Orthodox Church, and placed a wreath at the Monument for the Fallen Heroes of the Soviet Volunteer Air Force in Jiefang Park.
