Tonight: Canadian Authors on Norman Bethune

Norman Bethune's selfless commitment to the Chinese people made such an impression on Mao Zedong that generations of Chinese students were required to memorise the Chairman's eulogy to him.

This talk will bring together Canadians who are related with Dr. Norman Bethune in this way or that, either through their writing, family relations, and/or admiration this Canadian national hero who dedicated his life to helping the people of China in the late 1930s.

Bill Cecil-Smith will talk about his parents, who were close friends of Dr. Bethune. Yan Li will discuss how she discovered, in Canada, the world's only existing photo of Norman Bethune together with Chairman Mao. Dennis Bock will introduce his excellent novel, The Communist's Daughter, which imagines a long letter written by Norman Bethune in China to his daughter, whom he had never met.
