Most authentic temples in Chongqing

Temples are places for Buddhists to expound the texts of Buddhism and cultivate themselves. People frequently go to temples to pray with good wishes.

Although Chongqing is not a Buddhist resort, a large number of temples are hiding among the fine mountains and waters.
Luohan Temple, Yuzhong District
Luohan Temple located on Yuzhong District's Minzu Road is one of China's key Buddhist temples from the Han era, a national key cultural relic protection site, and the place where the Buddhist Association of Chongqing is located. With an endless stream of visitors throughout the year, a harmonious and peaceful scene has been formed in the prosperous Yuzhong District.

Built in the Northern Song Dynasty, this temple, originally named Zhiping Temple, was built on Luohan Caves, including main buildings such as Mingbei Pavilion, Gufo Rock, Daxiong Hall, and the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats.

Opening hours: It is open from 08:30-18:00 with religious activities held on the first day and the fifteenth day of each lunar month and Buddhist festivals.

Route: Take No. 4015 trolley bus, or No. 103, 104, 105, 111, 112, 122 bus or No. 105 tour (outer ring) bus to get there.
Huayan Temple
Jiulongpo District·The Most Famous Temple in Eastern Sichuan
Huayan Temple located in Jiulongpo District's Huayan Temple Scenic Spot got its name for the Huayan Cave south of the temple. In folk legends, the chalcedony in the ancient cave dropped to become sprays, thus it is named Huayan.

Near the mountain and by the river, Huayan Temple with the entire temple composed of building clusters of Huayan Cave on Dalao Mountain, Jieyin Hall, and Huayan Temple, is magnificent and spectacular, and is reputed as the Resort of Bashan Mountain and the Most Famous Temple in Eastern Sichuan.

Route: Take bus No. 222 to get there, and it is 23km from the downtown area.
Ciyun Temple, Nan'an District
Ciyun Temple located at the foot of Shizishan Mountain in Nan'an District's Xuantanmiao borders on the Yangtze River. On the left side of the temple, there is a carved stone lion sculpture facing Baixiang (white elephant) Street across the Yangtze River, which have long been known as, "The lion and elephant lock the river".

The temple, built in the Tang Dynasty was rebuilt in the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty and originally named Guanyin Temple. In 1927, it was renamed Ciyun Temple after Master Yunyan collected funds to expand it, and it was the only Buddhist temple with both monks and nuns at that time. The temple, with a Chinese and Western architectural style is unique among Buddhist temples in China.

Route: Take bus No. 304 and get off at Wuyuan Bus Stop, and then walk for ten minutes to get there.
Baolun Temple, Shapingba District
Baolun Temple located in Shapingba District's Ciqikou with Bayan Mountain at its back and Jialing River in front was built during the Xianping reign of Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty. The main hall of the temple, Daxiong Hall, was built in the 7th year of the reign of Emperor Xuande of the Ming Dynasty and covers an area of about 400 square metres. Buddhas such as Tathagata, Four Heavenly Kings, Maitreya, Avalokitesvara, Thousand-hand Bodhisattva, and Songzi Avalokitesvara are worshiped there.

Route: Take Rail Transit Line 1, No. 503 or 808 bus and get off at Ciqikou Station, and then walk for five minutes to get there.
Jinyun Temple
Beibei District·Jinyun Academy
Located in Beibei's Jinyun Mountain, a Buddhist resort with a history of over 1,500 years, was built in the first year of the Jingping reign of Liusong Dynasty of the Northern and Southern Dynasties and once was awarded by a line of emperors. The temple is China's only Mahakasyapa Bodhimanda. The temple has run a school named "Jinyun Academy" in the temple since ancient times.

Route: Take a bus at Jiefangbei, Nanping, or Yangjiaping to Beibei, transfer to the Beibei-Jinyun Mountain special tour bus line at Dixiashangchang (underground shopping mall) Bus Stop or No. 502 bus and get off at Jinyunshan Bus Stop, and then walk for five minutes to get there.
Jingyin Temple, Qijiang District
Jingyin Temple originally named Gujian Mountain Temple is a famous tourist resort of Bashu (Sichuan) area. Located in Qijiang District's Gujian Mountain Scenic Spot, the temple, built in the Song Dynasty, lies on the Gujian Mountain with an altitude of 1,146m.

Opening hours: 08:00-17:00

Route: Located 9km from downtown Qijiang County, it is one hour's drive from Chongqing's main urban districts. Drive on Inner Ring Expressway and Lanzhou-Haikou Expressway to get there.

While there is sunshine, it is a good time to go to a temple to listen to the Buddhist sound to seek a quiet mind. Maybe your prayer will be realized!
