What's Chinese Traditional Culture

Concerning Chinese Traditional Culture, you may think about following pictures:

Daliy life of ancient China

Chinese History

Chinese Architecture

Chinese Art

Chinese Science

For an area which has 56 nations and 5000+ years history, there are so many interesting things even Chinese people ourselves can not make a clear presentation.

I have met several foreign friends who are interested about "The orient wisdom". They complain "I know this is very old and it's powerful but even I spent some time trying to study it, I have no idea what it really is. people who teaches me those skills(Language, calligraphy, tea etc) can not explain ."

Ancient China(I think before 17 century) has a very different view of world from modem society knowledge system. If you have no idea of their philosophy, it’s a little difficult to understand those “interesting” stuffs above.

With thousands years of development, China has prompted many kinds of philosophy schools. There are 3 main systems: Taoism, Confusion and Buddhism.

Symbol of Buddhism is quite different from Nazis' .

Taoism comes from Chinese original understanding of our world. Ancient Chinese people have accumulated a lot of experience during daily activities. They thought the world is composed by two primary substances : male and female. These two substances develop into four images and evolve five basic elements later: fire, earth, wood, water and metal.

Four images and the big dipper (7000 years ago)

I once saw a grave build more than 10000 years ago which also showes such idea of the world(can not find the picture)

With civilization develops, this system becomes more and more complicated and infiltrate every field of ancient China society.

There are many similar places beween Chinese and Western astronomy

The law of this system is called "Tao"(principle of the universe). Those people who mastered "Tao" can calculate everything in the universe. (I wrote another article about our 4D world and my understanding of divination).

There are five skills of Taoism: Become immortality, Chinese Traditional Medicine, Physiognomy, Divination and Numerology.

I follow my teacher to study Da Liu Ren, which is a branch of Divination. The branchis “Zhou Yi” which is famous because of “The book of change”.

Original Confucian is from Taoism. Confucius is a master of Taoism. As there are so many metaphysical things in Taoism and which are difficult to study, Confucius simplified and classified ancient acknowledge and published several (maybe six) books to teach ordinary people the principle to become a good mannered people.

After 134 B.C. Empire of Han changed part of Confucius’s theory and made Confucian official academic. Since then, Confucian had been the most important school of China for more than 2000 years. Confucian value influences most of people living in south east Asia even .

Confucian in Taiwan, Singapore, Korea and Japan

Confucian teaches people how to be educated and virtuous. A gentleman should keep his kindness and help others. His behavior should always in the middle (not extreme).

Most skills of Chinese culture nowadays are from this system.

Around 0 A.D, Buddhism spread from ancient India to China. Have been developing with Chinese own philosophy for more than 2000 years, most of Buddhism in China now is Mahayana.

I myself am a Buddhist but I know little about Mahayana. Follow chapters in this article is just my understanding, they are not ture. They are not Buddhism doctrine.

Everyone has six basic senses: sense of vision, hear, smell, taste, touch and mind. Mind is the sixth sense which based on other five senses. When we saw something, hear something, smell something, taste something, touch something, we need this sixth sense (Mind) to establish an idea and distinguish these different things. Even when we are asleep, our mind can produce video, hear, smell, taste and touch sense (dream).

Mind is unreliable. Someone think this water is sweet while another one think the same water is a little bitter. Even one person will have different mind/mood during a split second. (Our bad mood will become better when a cute dog/cat appears ).

Mind conducts all activities, if mind is unreliable, knowledge we learn as well as our feelings are all not true.  Ordinary people can not realize that, they  indulges their desire, pursue their happiness all the time.

Shakyamuni spent many years thinking the truth of happiness and painful. At last he became enlightened.  He found “Samsara” and “Karma”. He teaches people to realize Samsara and Karma and get rid of them through practicing Buddhism.

Everyone can achieve enlightenment and becomes a Buddha.

Scholars in ancient China usually started their education from Confucian when they were children. After they grew up and know much more about the world, they will became interested in other two systems. Taoism, Confucian and Buddhism have many things in common. Meditation is a very important skills in all systems. Many famous scholars were good at all of these three  philosophy.

In this article, I have no chance to explain Taoism, Confucian and Buddhism deeply. Hope we can have chance to discuss in the future.
