Wu Song: auto market moves into the era of Chinese brands

  • At Auto Guangzhou 2015, which kicked off on Nov. 20, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (GAC) released its "1513" strategy as part of its 13th Five-Year Plan. Its Trumpchi brand premiered four new models - the MPV i-LOUNGE and EV Coupe seven-seater concept vehicles and the GS4 EV and GA3 PHEV new-energy vehicles (NEVs) - alongside the presentation of flagship models, such as the GA8 and GS4.

  • Wu Song, Executive Director of GAC Group and General Manager of GAC Passenger Vehicle Co., Ltd., said in an interview that under the "1513" strategy, GAC will place a priority on the development of indigenous brands, and will consider the GAC Automotive Engineering Institute as a technical R&D center and GAC Passenger Vehicle Co. as a manufacturing center to integrate and share R&D, sourcing, branding, and marketing resources to build "big indigenous brand" landscape and achieve three breakthroughs in terms of electrification, internationalization, and connectivity.

  • According to Wu, the auto market has entered into the era of Chinese brands, and Trumpchi has been ready to cope with the new situation. Upon the completion of its third-phase project of its manufacturing plant, Trumpchi will form an annual production capacity of 350,000 units, and will establish A- and A0- and B- and C-class platforms, covering cars, SUVs, and MPVs. Electric vehicle models will also arrive in 2017. In terms of powertrains, Trumpchi has developed 1.0T and 1.3T engines, and will launch 2.0T and 1.8T engines next year.

  • The Trumpchi brand is expected to be a major contributor to GAC's annual output and sales target of one million units by 2020. Its goal is to become a leader in the NEV segment. In light of its plan, NEV output and sales will account for 50% of GAC's total by 2020. Along with the "One Belt And One Road" strategy, GAC is dedicated to building the globally influential Chinese brand.
