China's local auto brands significantly improve in dependability

  • According to J.D. Power's China Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), China's auto market has made significant improvements in vehicle dependability this year, making it nearly on par with mature markets like America.

  • The study measures problems that were experienced by owners of vehicles between 37-48 months of ownership over the past six months, and includes 202 different problem symptoms across all areas of the vehicle. Overall dependability is determined by the level of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting higher quality. Vehicle dependability in China averages 156 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) in 2015, 37 PP100 less than 2014.

  • China's local auto brands have made the greatest progress with problems per 100 vehicles decreasing 48. Domestic auto brands are narrowing their gaps with international brands.

  • Despite an improvement in vehicle dependability, China's auto market is still facing several breakdown problems.
